Chrom is one of the main protagonists of the video game Fire Emblem: Awakening. He is the prince of the Halidom of Ylisse and wielder of Falchion, a legendary sword once wielded by his ancestor, Marth. He is also a playable character in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. Since his debut, Chrom’s popularity has endured, and he has become the subject of various memes.

Origin

Chrom is one of the main characters in Fire Emblem: Awakening, which was released in Japan on April 19th, 2012, and in North America on February 4th, 2013.^[1] In addition to being royalty, Chrom is the captain of the Shepherds, a militia force serving to protect the people from bandits attacks. On one of his patrols, Chrom discovers Robin, an amnesiac with a gift for tactics, and welcomes Robin to the Shepherds as their tactician.^[2] Chrom is also the father of Lucina. A future version of Lucina traveled through time to save Chrom’s world from falling to apocalyptic ruin by the Fell Dragon Grima.

Since the release of Fire Emblem: Awakening, Chrom has been a regular subject of fan art related to the game. On October 29th, 2014, Tumblr user rea-iam^[3] submitted a version of When Mama Isn’t Home featuring Chrom and Lucina and had received 13,884 notes (shown below, left). On August 8th, 2018, tio-trile^[4] submitted to Tumblr fan art of Chrom tearing up after receiving an invitation to join Super Smash Brothers. The post has received 4,119 notes (shown below, right).

Although Chrom has not won Choose Your Legends, an online poll where the top 2 male and female characters receive a special alt for the mobile game Fire Emblem Heroes, Chrom has consistently placed in the top 10 overall in three out of four rounds.^[5]

NTR’d by Chrom / Getting Chrom'd on

NTR’d by Chrom refers to an event in Fire Emblem: Awakening where if Chrom is not married by the end of Chapter 11, he would be forced into marriage with someone from the Shepherds. If the player intends to marry one of Chrom’s eligible candidates and does not marry them before completing Chapter 11, Chrom could potentially marry them instead (shown below, left). Another variant, getting Chrom'd on, has players who pick female Robin wanting to marry someone else but Chrom ends up proposing to Robin first leading the two to marry. This locks the player from marrying their intended option (shown below, right).

Chrom puns

Chrom puns refers to a series of memes of which parts of a word (most commonly the prefix “com”) are replaced by Chrom’s name. These puns are typically said by Chrom himself.

“I suppose I’ll get my chance another day”

I suppose I’ll get my chance another day is a memorable quote said by Chrom at the conclusion of Robin and Lucina’s Smash trailer. During the lead-up to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS's release, Chrom was seen as the forerunner as the next playable character from the Fire Emblem franchise. On July 14th, 2014, it was revealed that Robin and Lucina would be playable in Smash but not Chrom.^[6] Masahiro Sakurai clarified that while he considered Chrom as a playable character, he had turned him down believing he would be too similar to Marth and Ike.^[7] Chrom became the butt of jokes by the Smash and Fire Emblem fandoms as a result.

Chrom would later get his chance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate joining the roster as a playable echo fighter of Roy (shown below).
