About
Cigarette Adaptors refer to a series of humorous 3D designs of various adapters for one or more cigarettes intended for 3D printing. Gaining virality in the 3D printing community in late July 2024, the designs saw viral spread on X / Twitter and other social media through reposts and memes, with designs referencing the concurrent 500 Cigarettes meme being frequently submitted.
Origin
On September 28th, 2021, Thingiverse[1] user SimBim uploaded a 3D printable design for a "Double Cigarette Adapter" to the site. The design (shown below, left) was downloaded over 1,000 times in three years. On October 3rd, 2021, X[2] / Twitter user @fart posted a screenshot of the design with the caption, "I knew this 3d printer would come in handy." The post (shown below, right) gained over 6,800 reposts and 73,000 likes in three years.
Spread
On October 13th, 2022, Tumblr[3] account catchymemes reposted the image, with the post accruing over 1,200 likes and reblogs in two years.
On July 16th, 2024, Printables[4] user XYZWERKZ posted a design for a "20 Cigarettes Adapter" to the site, which gained over 49,000 views and was downloaded over 3,300 times in one month (shown below, left). On August 1st, X[5] user @drawbrandondraw posted a screenshot of the design, commenting, "big things happening in the 3D print community." The post (shown below, right) garnered over 19,000 reposts and 220,000 likes in two weeks.
In the following weeks, more users on Printables and other 3D printing sites posted designs and STLs of various cigarette adapters.
For example, on August 2nd, 2024, Printables[6] user XYZWERKZ posted a design referencing the concurrent 500 Cigarettes meme, which was viewed over 41,000 times and downloaded over 1,500 times (shown below, left). On August 3rd, Printables[7] user Bustean posted a "lore-accurate" version of the design (shown below, right).
More posts sharing the designs were circulated on X / Twitter and other social media in early August 2024.
