Crashing But … refers to a series of humorous TikTok skits in which users pretend to be in a car crash, with the way they go through the crash affected by another person present in the car with them. The format was popularized on the app in November 2021, particularly with Crashing but Your Crush Is with You videos.

Origin

On October 29th, 2021, TikToker[1] itsjulyski posted a TikTok of themselves sitting in the car, captioned "crashing but your crush is with you." In the video, @itsjulyski pretends to get into a car crash, continuing to flirt with his crush as he goes through it. The TikTok received over 648,000 views and 93,000 likes in one month (shown below).

On October 31st, @itsjulyski posted two more similar videos,[2][3] captioned "cr@shing but someone's recording you" and "cr@shing but you don't want the baby to cry," which received over 1.4 million views and 223,000 likes and 5.2 million views and 844,000 likes, respectively (shown below, left and right).

Starting in early November 2021, other users on TikTok created humorous videos based on the format. For example, on November 3rd, 2021, TikToker[4] @loganluvscats posted a video that gained over 395,000 views and 73,200 likes in one month (shown below, left). On November 6th, TikToker[5] @fr3akymike_ posted a meme that gained over 8.5 million views and 1.5 million likes in the same period (shown below, right).

In November and December 2021, @itsjulyski and other TikTok users posted multiple versions of the meme using both original audio[6] and other sounds. Several versions of the meme went viral on social media. For example, a November 29th, 2021, repost of one such meme by iFunny[7] user Femto gained over 1,400 smiles in one week.
