History

The land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River has been contested for over a century. The modern Israeli–Palestinian conflict traces back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Jewish nationalist/Zionist movements sought to establish a homeland in Palestine, where Arab communities already lived for centuries. After World War II, the United Nations proposed partitioning the land into Jewish and Arab states. Israel declared independence in 1948, prompting war with neighboring Arab states and the displacement of many Palestinians. In 1967, Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza, territories that remain central to the dispute. Palestinians seek an independent state in these areas, while Israel cites security and historical claims.^[1]
