About

The Dame Tu Cosita Challenge is online social game in which users on the lip-syncing ArtNou application Muical.ly attempt to reenact the dance from a web video of a green alien dancing to the song "Dame Tu Cosita" by El Chombo.

Origin

On October 16th, 2017, Daily Motion[1] user @ArtNoux uploaded a video of a green alien named Popoy dancing to a remix of reggaeton song "Dame Tu Cosita" by El Chombo called "La Cripta Remixes Cutty Ranks Y El Chombo” by Don Chezina.[4] The post (shown below) received more than 5,400 views in five months.

Precursor

ArtNoux's version of the video is a remake of an earlier animation featuring an Alien dancing to "Dame Tu Cosita." The video (shown below) was uploaded on May 6th, 2015 by YouTuber Kuki Graph. The original video has been removed, but it was a reuploaded by YouTuber el nino GTA 5 el tonilike (shown below).

Several months later, on Febraury 2nd, YouTuber[2] Kuki Graph uploaded the video to YouTube, where it received more than 13 million views in one month.

Five days later, on February 7th, ArtNoux's Facebook [3] account shared the video again with the caption "Qui danse comme un Popoy ?" (translation: Can you dance like Popoy?) The post (shown below) received more than 3,300 shares and 1,700 reactions in one months.

Days after ArtNoux's post, people began posting compilations of people dancing to the song from Snapchat and Musical.ly. On March 10th, 2018, the YouTube account ELEMENTS publsihed a compilation (shown below, right). Within two months, the post received more than 16 million views.

Official Video Release

On April 5th, the YouTube account for El Chombo released an official music video for the song. The post (shown below) received more than 245 million views in one month.

On April 21st, Quora[5] user Biki Rose posted about the song.

On May 1st, Redditor [6] Meteoroloigist asked about the song in the /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit. They wrote, "This is what I'm talking about if YOU'RE the one who's out of the loop. I've seen this video posted a couple of times, and I looked it up for myself and can't help but wonder why what looks like a sub-par surreal meme was posted on a channel with 11 million subscribers, and how it managed to garner 225 million views in the span of 3 weeks. Is there something I'm missing here?"

That day, Billboard[7] reported that "Dame Tu Cosita" debuted at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 5 on the Latin charts. They also reported that the song has received more than 10 million stream and 1,000 downloads sold.

Well, as far as internet "challenges" go, imitating a CGI alien's gross anatomical misalignments isn't that bad.
Well, aside from keeping reggaeton alive a little longer, which is pretty much the musical equivalent of a fucking warcrime, but nothing much you can do there.
