Donald Trump's Water Break refers to a series of jokes and references to a moment in a November 2017 press conference in which President Trump stopped for a water break. People found Trump's pause for water similar to that of Senator Marco Rubio's water break in 2013, which Trump famously mocked.
Origin
On November 15th, 2017, President Trump held a press conference about his recent trip to Asia, where he met with leaders from China and the Philippines, among others. During his address, he stopped and looked for a water bottle. When he couldn't find a bottle, he said, "They don't have water. It's ok." Someone pointed to another bottle of water, at which point, he paused his speech, opened the bottle and with both hands drank from the bottle.
Spread
Within seconds of taking the sip, people on Twitter began posing about Trump's water break. Some of the earliest tweets referenced Marco Rubio's infamous water breaks, which were made during the senator's response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union in February 2013 (examples below).
Within minutes of people tweeting about Marco Rubio's water break, the senator responded to Trump's sip of water. He tweeted, "Similar,but needs work on his form.Has to be done in one single motion & eyes should never leave the camera. But not bad for his 1st time." The post (shown below) received more than 21,000 retweets and 81,000 likes in less than 24 hours.
Throughout the afternoon, people online pointed out how Trump had mocked Rubio for drinking water during the State of the Union. Numerous people posted the campaign speech in which Trump mimicked Rubio (below, left and center) and a tweet Trump wrote about Rubio's drinking (below, right).
That day, Instagram user @AdamTheCreator used the moment to create a special effect in which Trump sips from the bottle and shrinks in size. The video (shown below) features the chyron, "Trump Dazzles with New Trick" and received more than 120,000 views and 9,400 likes in less than 24 hours.
Several media outlets covered the water break including, Uproxx,[3] NBC,[4] The Independent[5] and more. That day, Twitter[6] published a Moments page about the reaction to Trump's water break.
