DOOM: Repercussions of Evil is an amateur fanfiction for the video game series Doom written by Fanfiction.net user Peter Chimaera in March of 2002. Like the infamous series My Immortal, the story gained a cult status among fanfiction communities and imageboard sites for its carefree grammar and punctuation.

Origin

Peter Chimaera posted his first short story titled "Digimon Savez The Wrold!1111 [sic]" to the fanfiction archive website Fanfiction.net^[2] on March 19th, 2002. While the work was filled with spelling and grammatical errors, it received many positive reviews encouraging Chimaera to continue submitting stories to the site. On June 25th, Chimaera published the story DOOM: Repercussions of Evil, which was subsequently removed by Fanfiction.net moderators for disregarding spelling and grammar. Set in the universe of the first-person shooter video game series Doom, the story describes the experiences of the space marine John Stalvern as he defends his base against a demon attack.

John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons.
"This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!"
So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons
"I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the demons" he shouted
The radio said "No, John. You are the demons"
And then John was a zombie.

Identity

The Fanfiction.net user Hyena1^[16] revealed on his personal site^[4] that Peter Chimaera was an alternate account he used to post poorly written fanfictions. He described his Hyena1 account as a place to post stories that used correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Spread

For several years, the comic remained relatively unknown. On April 19th, 2006, a YTMND titled "DOOM: Repercussions of Evil" was created by user Orlics, which featured a screen shot of the Fanfiction.net submission accompanied by a dramatic reading of the text. On May 12th, a similar YTMND page was submitted by user IWanaSoftTaco titled "Doom Fan Fic", accompanied by another dramatic reading of the story. On July 7th, 2007, a Peter Chimaera entry was created on the Internet culture wiki Encyclopedia Dramatica.^[5] On July 25th, the fanfiction was submitted to the /b/ (random) board on 4chan^[17], where several users responded with illustrations of the story:

On December 2nd, Chimaera launched the website PeterChimaera.com^[13], which featured the Doom and Batman fanfictions that had been removed from Fanfiction.net. On February 11th, 2008, Fanfiction.net^[12] user Osaka420 submitted a retelling of the story in proper English titled "Doom: Repercussions of Evil Mark II."On June 5th, a Garry's Mod version of the story (shown below, left) was uploaded by YouTuber riff1. On August 3rd, 2010, an entry for the phrase "And Then John Was a Zombie" was submitted to the database TVTropes^[8], which listed the line as an example of "He Who Fights Monsters"^[20] trope. On December 13th, 2010, Newgrounds^[18] user Phobotech uploaded a flash animation (shown below, right) inspired by the story, which received over 105,000 views within 17 months.

Several comics inspired by the fanfiction can be found on the art sharing website DeviantArt^[19], many of which feature versions of the snowclone template "No X, You are the Y."

Search Interest

Although the piece was written in 2002, searches for Peter Chimaera's work didn't produce a visible trend until October of 2007.
