The Drake Cake Trend or 'Nothing Was the Same' Cake Trend is a trend where users bake cakes that resemble the album artwork for Drake's 2013 album "Nothing Was the Same." The trend began on TikTok in July 2022 and went viral over the following months, spreading to platforms including Reddit and seeing a resurgence in popularity in early 2023.
Origin
On July 30th, 2022, TikToker[1] @chrissydibs posted a video where a group of women bake and decorate a cake that poorly resembles the album artwork for Drake's 2013 album "Nothing Was the Same," garnering over 8.6 million views in seven months (shown below).

Spread
The trend spread on TikTok over the following months. On August 7th, 2022, TikToker[2] @ihaveacrushonaboogie posted a video of a Drake cake, garnering over 6.1 million views in six months (shown below, left). On August 21st, TikToker[3] @user4567382957 posted a video doing the trend, garnering over 4.1 million views in a similar span of time (shown below, right).

The trend also inspired posts showcasing Drake cakes on other social media platforms. For example, on September 8th, a video from the trend was reposted to /r/therewasanattempt,[4] garnering over 18,000 upvotes in five months. On November 15th, a photo of a Drake cake was posted to /r/cakedecorating,[5] garnering over 580 upvotes in three months (shown below).
The trend saw a resurgence in popularity in January through February 2023. On January 28th, 2023, TikToker[6] @breevaughn posted a video making a Drake cake, garnering over 7.3 million views in a week (shown below). On February 6th, TikToker[7] @meyratje posted a version that gained over 2.3 million views in a day.
