Elon-chan is a nickname for Elon Musk used in jokes referencing the entrepreneur's appreciation for anime.

Origin

On October 14th, 2018, Musk tweeted the trailer for the film Your Name leading user @shawnwasabi to reply "weeblon musk." In response, Musk tweeted "Elon-chan" (shown below). Within 48 hours, the tweet gained over 63,400 likes and 23,100 retweets.[1]

That day, YouTuber "PewDiePie": replied to the "Elon-chan" tweet, saying that Musk was a "True man of culture" (shown below). Within 48 hours, the tweet received upwards of 36,600 likes and 1,600 retweets. Meanwhile, several anime-themed images of Musk reached the front page of the /r/animemes subreddit (shown below).



Also on October 14th, Musk tweeted "It is time to create a mecha" (shown below, left). Over the next two days, the tweet received upwards of 23,700 likes and 57,000 retweets. Shortly after, Redditor BlazeBladez submitted a photoshop of Musk titled "Elon-Chan Creates Big Mecha" to /r/animemes[3] (shown below, right).
