Elon Musk and Grimes' Third Child, Techno Mechanicus, also nicknamed Tau for short, refers to the hitherto hidden third baby of singer Grimes and Elon Musk after X Æ A-12 and Exa Dark Sideræl Musk. The child was revealed in a biography of Musk by Walter Isaacson, notably days after Grimes tweeted a plea to Isaacson to talk to Musk and convince him to "see her son."
Background
On September 6th, 2023, Walter Isaacson posted photographs to promote his upcoming biography of Elon Musk. One of the photographs was Musk with the twins he had with Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis. Those children were conceived using Musk's sperm donation while he was expecting a second child with Grimes.[2]
That same day, Grimes tweeted a plea to Walter Isaacson (author of an upcoming biography about Elon Musk) reading, "Tell Shivon to unblock me and tell Elon to let me see my son or plz respond to my lawyer. I have never even been allowed to see a photo of these children until this moment, despite this situation utterly ripping my family apart." The tweet was deleted but reposted to Reddit's /r/Grimes[1] that day by user Pale_Ad_1295.
Developments
On September 10th, 2023, The New York Times[3] reported that Isaacson's biography revealed that Musk and Grimes had a third child, named Techno Mechanicus. The child was born in mid-2022, according to the biography, and will go by the nickname "Tau." In the book, Grimes says of Tau, "Tau is so amazing. He came out with eyes that could just see so deeply into your soul, with so much knowledge. He looks like a little Spock. He's definitely a Vulcan."
That day, Grimes tweeted a statement about the news[4] along with an explanation for her earlier tweet. The tweet indicated she had hashed things out with Zilis (shown below).
Online Reaction
On social media, users reacted to yet another unusual name for a Grimes-Musk child. The Warhammer 40,000 community in particular made jokes about the name, thinking "Techno Mechanicus" was a reference to the Warhammer organization "Adeptus Mechanicus"[4] or that his nickname "Tau" could be referencing the alien race called the "Tau Empire."[9]
For example, on September 10th, 2023, Redditor dazli6 posted a joke to /r/Grimdank[5] about the couple naming a child "Horus Lupercal" (the "Traitor Primarch" and an antagonist of the 40k universe), gaining over 3,600 points in one day (shown below, left). The same day, user saws_910 posted a meme about the name in the same subreddit,[6] gaining over 1,600 points in the same time frame (shown below, right).
Twitter users also made jokes about the name. For example, on September 10th, user @MatttGFX[7] compared the name choice to naming a child after a Fire Emblem character, gaining over 270 retweets and 2,700 likes in one day (shown below, left). User @sadmonsters[8] tweeted a joke about the Woke Mind Virus, a repeated concern of Musk, gaining over 360 retweets and 1,900 likes in a day (shown below, right).
