About

The Enemy Controller (Japanese: エネミーコントローラー), sometimes called "Ene-Con" (エネコン) for short, is a magic card from the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game pictured as a generic game controller. On Nico Nico Douga (NND) and YouTube, the card became a MAD video fad centered around a scene from the 3rd season of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime where Seto Kaiba uses the card to control one Yugi's monsters. This scene has been parodied multiple times.

Origin

The scene originates from Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 3 Episode 129: "Clash in the Coliseum, Part 1 (The Sky Coliseum: Yugi vs Kaiba)."[1] Kaiba uses his face-down magic card, Enemy Controller, to control one of Yugi's monsters so he can summon his god monster, Obelisk the Tormentor. At the last moment Yugi uses his face-down trap card, Lightforce Sword, which prevents Obelisk from being summoned for three turns. While using Enemy Controller Kaiba shouts out "Reverse Card Ope*" and the button sequence "Left Right A B" in order to control the monster. On May 15th, 2007, a Nico Nico Douga user posted a Marisa Stole the Precious Thing parody on May 15, 2007, titled "Kaiba Entered the Horrible Command".[2]

Spread

After the Marisa parody, multiple parodies began spreading on Nico Nico Douga, including MADs and AMVs.[3] Several western users on YouTube created their own YouTube Poop Music Videos (YTPMVs). Most of the YTPMVs use the Japanese source video, and less commonly, the English version is used. As of March 2013, though they have been sometimes deleted due to copyright claims. the amount of videos in this series on NND is over 400[4], and many of them are uploaded to YouTube.[5]

Official "Enemy Controller" Game

On January 2010, KONAMI released Duel Terminal – Pulse of the Trishula, the eighth installment of KONAMI Yu-Gi-Oh arcade Duel Terminal series.[6] The game includes a mini-game of Seto Kaiba's Enemy Controller. In this game, players input commands along with Kaiba's order which resembled the MAD videos. Moreover, several of his remarks are exactly popular phrases in the Enemy Controller series.
