It Should Have Been Me Not Him, continued, It's Not Fair! refers to a scene from the English dub of the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! where Yami Yugi, after Yugi's soul is taken, drops to his knees in defeat and yells, "It should've been me not him! It's not fair!" The scene started gaining popularity as a reaction meme and exploitable in 2021, often attached to sexual clips from anime to express desire for the actions depicted in the scene and jealousy towards the recipient.
Origin
On November 13th, 2004, the English dub of season four episode 158 overall of Yu-Gi-Oh! aired in North America.[1] In the episode, Yami Yugi loses Yugi's soul in a duel. In response, he drops to his knees and slams the ground with his fist, crying, "It should've been me, not him! It's not fair!" On January 15th, 2020, the clip was posted to YouTube.[2] An HD clip of the scene was uploaded to YouTube in April 2021 (shown below).
Spread
On January 30th, 2020, the scene was posted by Twitter[3] page @videoreacts, gaining over 756,000 views and 180 likes in two years. On July 27th, 2021, YouTuber Shawnpai posted a video attaching the clip to the end of a scene from the anime My First Girlfriend Is A Gal, gaining over 15,000 views in nine months (shown below).
On September 8th, YouTuber Good Grief Chief posted a similar video attaching the video to the end of a clip from Akame ga Kill! gaining over 170,000 views in seven months (shown below).
A captioned screenshot of the scene is also used as a reaction to similar content. On October 18th, 2021, a 9GAG[4] user posted a meme using the image to react to a screenshot from Drake and Josh where Drake is uninterested in the advances of two goth girls, gaining over 800 upvotes in six months (shown below).
