Pot of Greed is an infamous card from the popular trading card game Yu-Gi-Oh, which allows the user to draw 2 more cards from their deck and add them to their hand. Online, the card has gained notoriety due the fact that the anime series explains the card's function every time is used, inspiring several jokes regarding not knowing its effect, mostly under the question "But what does pot of greed do?"

Origin

The Pot of Greed first appeared in Yu-Gi-Oh in episode 65 of the anime, "Mime Control, Part 1,"^[1] which aired July 24th, 2001 in Japan and March 8th, 2003 in the USA.

Spread

On December 11th 2014, YouTube user Wheeler uploaded a video titled "Pot of Greed in Yugioh" which showed a compilation of the card being used throughout the anime. Every time the card is used, the user explains what the card does. The video has gained over 1 million views (shown below, left)). On December 1st, 2015, YouTuber Millennium Camcorder uploaded a similar video which gained over 79,000 views (shown below, right).

The popularity of the video Yu-Gi-Oh copypasta about the card, which goes:

POT OF GREED ALLOWS ME TO DRAW TWO MORE CARDS. I WILL START MY TURN BY PLAYING POT OF GREED WHICH ALLOWS ME TO DRAW TWO MORE CARDS. I WILL PLAY THE MAGIC CARD, POT OF GREED, WHICH ALLOWS ME TO DRAW TWO NEW CARDS.

The copypasta was uploaded to /r/copypasta on April 1st, 2016.^[3] The copypasta saw frequent use during April Fools Day 2016 on the subreddit r/hearthstone as the subbreddit was made Yu-Gi-Oh themed for the day (examples shown below). The moment was inquired about on /r/OutOfTheLoop^[2] several days later.

On April 16th, 2016, YouTuber RANK10YGO uploaded a 12-minute video humorously over-explaining what the Pot of Greed card does, gaining over 220,000 views (shown below, left). On April 27th, 2017, YouTuber 414YGO uploaded a similar video, gaining over 22,000 views (shown below, right).
