About
An Etsy Witch or Etsy Witches refers to witches practicing the modern Wiccan religion who offer their services on the website Etsy to cast curses and spells on people for money. While Etsy reportedly banned the sale of magic and spells in 2015, witches continued to sell spells on Etsy throughout the 2010s and 2020s. In September 2025, Jezebel published an article claiming that they cursed right-wing political pundit Charlie Kirk using Etsy witches only days before he was fatally shot at Utah Valley University, inspiring memes and discourse about Etsy witches following the incident.
Origin
On June 19th, 2015, The Verge[1] reported on Etsy's ban on the sale of magic on the site. The article refers to the act of people who identify as witches selling magic spells and curses on the site. The policy update on Etsy purportedly reads:
Any metaphysical service that promises or suggests it will effect a physical change (e.g., weight loss) or other outcome (e.g., love, revenge) is not allowed, even if it delivers a tangible item.
Despite the reported ban, witches have continued to sell spells on the site, with numerous results appearing with a search for "witch" on Etsy.

Jezebel Charlie Kirk Article / Shooting
On September 8th, 2025, Jezebel[2] published an article titled, "We Paid Some Etsy Witches to Curse Charlie Kirk." The article describes buying curses from Etsy witches against Kirk, including the “Shit Your Pants Spell" and a “MAKE EVERYONE HATE HIM" curse. The end of the article reads:
So, did my Etsy curses work? Time will tell. The forces move in mysterious ways, and as the Priestess reminded me, “Spellwork is a collaboration between the caster, the client, and the universe itself.” For now, we can only trust in the timing of the great unknown.
A special thank you to the witches of the modern age, who work tirelessly to hex Republicans and topple conservative regimes (and the occasional ex-boyfriend). Your work is appreciated.
And to you, Mr. Kirk: May the rash come swiftly.
Two days later, on September 10th, Charlie Kirk was then shot during a speech at Utah Valley University (UVU). He died in the hospital in the hours following the event.[3]
That day, people pulled up the Jezebel article and began posting memes blaming the curses. For example, on September 10th, 2025, X[4] user @lib_crusher posted a reaction of Brian Griffin from Family Guy in shock to a tweet sharing the article, garnering over 55,000 likes in about two hours.
