The tweets galvanized the Smash community, causing major figures to express their disgust with the community, with players like Alpharad retiring from the competitive scene altogether as a result of the drama.
Background
On March 22nd, 2019, top Super Smash Brothers player Tamim posted a series of tweets in which he expressed his disgust with the game's competitive community, most notably calling out fellow player Ally, 28, for having a relationship with a minor.[1] The tweets and Tamim's Twitter account have since been deleted.
Tamim also posted screenshots of several Twitter users DM-ing him stories about StaticManny, alleging that he had been sexually inappropriate and aggressive towards them. The tweets were compiled in a video by user @LeafTheGod (shown below).

Developments
Ally Allegations
At a certain point in Tamim's tweets, he identified the alleged victim of Ally's relationship as other top player CaptainZack, who is 17. This led to Zack allegedly deleting Tamim's account, which he had access to, and Tamim continuing his allegations on another account, @tamimexposing.[2] In one tweet on that account, Tamim posted a screenshot from a Discord chat in which Ally states that Zack liked him and he liked him back (shown below, left). The following day, CaptainZack responded on Twitter,[3] thanking his fans for support and stating nothing sexual happened between him and Ally (shown below, right).
The drama caused notable Smash player Alpharad, who has also grown popular for his Smash play on YouTube, to announce he was leaving the competitive scene "for the forseeable future"[4] (shown below).
StaticManny Allegations
Responding to the allegations made against him, StaticManny[5] provided screenshots showing how Tamim had edited his screenshots to make it look like Manny was harassing a girl when they were engaging in consensual sexual conversation (shown below).
The drama was discussed in several Reddit threads, appearing in both /r/SmashBros[6] and /r/OutOfTheLoop.[7][8] The situation was covered in a video by Smash community member Omni, who argued that it illustrated the dark side of the Smash community and that people remaining silent on these issues they may know about enables predators (shown below).
June and July 2019 Events
On June 15th, 2019, at Long Island, New York local tournament AON, Ally, playing Snake, was defeated by a relatively unknown 15-year old player named Bocchi, playing Isabelle (shown below).
The upset drew attention from the Smash community and gaming outlets, including Kotaku,[9] who wrote an article about the upset. Over the following weeks, Bocchi[10] reported receiving hate online, to the point that on July 2nd, she announced she was retiring as "Bocchi" (shown below). However, she continued tweeting afterwards, saying she had received a lot of support from the community.
On July 4th, Ally announced that his previous denials about his relationship with CaptainZack were a lie, and he had in fact had a relationship with Zack. He also announced his retirement from Smash.[11]
The proximity of these two events led people compare them and show how people supporting Ally and bullying bocchi was emblematic of the Smash community's toxicity. User @OnuaMWD[12] posted a comparison of reactions to the controversies, gaining over 270 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, left). User @Toph_bbq[13] stated players being more upset at Ally retiring than Bocchi being bullied "disgusted" him, gaining over 1,200 retweets and 8,000 likes (shown below, right). The controversies were covered in two threads on /r/OutOfTheLoop.[14][15]
