Overview

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Apology Video refers to a controversial viral video in which American actors Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis recorded a video expressing their remorse after showing written support for their former That '70s Show co-star, Danny Masterson, ahead of his rape case sentencing in September 2023. The apology video was criticized by many, resulting in more backlash and mocking memes on Twitter (X), Instagram and TikTok over the following days.

Background

On September 8th, 2023, Variety[1] posted an article detailing that American actors Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis were two of more than 50 people who wrote to the judge in the Danny Masterson sexual assault trial to support the convicted actor ahead of his sentencing. Masterson was a former That '70s Show co-star, who was accused of sexual assault in 2017 and sentenced to 30 years to life on two counts of rape.

The letter written by the actors was an effort to urge the judge for lesser sentencing, as the YouTube[2] channel for Inside Edition posted in a video explaining the letter's content (shown below). The post, uploaded on September 8th, 2023, amassed over 131,000 views and 1,800 likes in four days.

Developments

The letter received massive criticism online, which made Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis post an apology video on Instagram[3] on September 9th, 2023. In the video (shown below), they addressed the criticism in a brief message said by Kutcher, "We are aware of the pain that has been caused by the character letters that we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson," followed by Kunis stating they always have "historically" supported victims and "will continue to do so in the future." The video garnered over 281,000 likes in three days.

Online Reactions

Online, the apology video was received with mixed responses, prompting backlash on social media. For instance, on September 10th, 2023, X[4] user @mattxiv posted a photoshopped image of the apology video paired with an image of the actor's pool mansion, which the user alleges "their PR team told them to sit in front of an innocuous normal-person looking wall." The post (shown below) received more than 10 million views and 198,000 likes in a day.

On September 9th, X[5] user @princess_antifa resurfaced an old video of Ashton Kutcher commenting about actress Hillary Duff saying she was "one of the girls that we're all waiting for to turn 18." The video (shown below) garnered over 21 million views and 107,000 likes in two days.
