Background

On February 20th, 2019, counterterrorism expert Seamus Hughes tweeted that a US coast guard lieutenant had been arrested on February 15th. They wrote,[1] "A LT in the US Coast Guard was arrested this week for drug and gun charges. It looked like a run of the mill case until the detention memo filed yesterday. He had a hit list, contacts with white supremacists, guns, and, again, was an Coastie assigned to HQ." The tweet received more than 93,00 retweets and 13,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below).

Hughes later posted portions of the court documents[6] that describe the arrest as "the proverbial tip of the iceberg.[2] The defendant is a domestic terrorist, bent on committing acts dangerous to human life that are intended to affect governmental conduct."[3] Additionally, they posted a "draft letter to a well known American neo nazi advocating for a white state" and "a fan" of Andres Breivik, who committed a 2011 terrorist attack in Norway, killing 77 people.[4]

Seamus Hughes @SeamusHughes Hint about the importance of the case was in the opening paragraph. Christopher Hasson wrote a draft letter to a well known American neo nazi advocating for a white state Nationai Securiy Cutter Acquisition Months later, in September 2017, the defendant sent himself a draft letter, which he apparently wrote to a known American neo-Nazi leader. In the letter, the defendant identified himself as a White Nationalist for over 30 years and advocat establish a white homeland. The defendant sent himself this letter roughly seven weeks after the Charlottesville neoNazi rally. In the letter, the defendant writes ed for "focused violence" in order to I am writing you regards to your ideas behind North West migration. To date I have read most of your books and briefly looked at your website. I am a long time White Nationalist, having been a skinhead 30 plus years ago before my time in the military. While I fully support the idea of a white homeland, my friends who still play at being That is neither here nor there it is not an accusation the person who told me this served a 12 year prison sentence and never ratted me out so I will not dispute him nor will I accuse you. I never saw a reason for mass protest or wearing uniforms marching around provoking people with swastikas ctc. I was and am a man of action you cannot change minds protesting like that. However you can make change with a lttle focused violence.. The government has expertly infiltrated and destroyed from within most if no all Pro White organizations... . seems lost. How long we can hold out there and prevent niggerization of the Northwest until whites wake up on their own or are forcibly made to make a decision whether to roll over and die or to stand up remains to be seen. ButI know a few younger ones that are tired of waiting and I feel we need them to resettle and build a community before they throw their life away with some desperate measure They need a Homeland to fight for as America has turned its back on them. I know more than a few that went this path and it's a f------ waste a skinhead at 40 plus years old say that you are an informant. We need a white homeland as Europe like shoo ting up a mosque in an area that doesn't want us. In addition, from January 2017 to January 2019, the defendant conducted online searches and make thousands of visits for pro-Russian, neo-fascist, and neo-Nazi literature. 4:02 PM-20 Feb 2019
Seamus Hughes @SeamusHughes He was an fan of Anders Breivik far-right domestic terrorist, committed two coordinated terror attacks in Norway leading to the death of 77 Norwegian citizens. Prior to the attacks, Breivik spent some three years producing a detailed manifesto wherein he embraced the ideology of "Crusader Nationalism," which he imagined would counteract what he termed the "islamization" of Europe. Breivik believed immigration of Muslim individuals was a threat to Europcan countries, and he believed this wave of immigration was being facilitated by Cultural Marxism and political correctness. Breivik posited that unbridled Muslim immigration would bring the collapse of Western culture and European Civil War. Therefore, in order to curtail Muslim immigration, Breivik advocated for violent action that would serve as a catalyst for the downfall of Cultural Marxist governments. The suggested targets for violent action were influential Cultural Marxist" politicians, media personalities, professors, writers/artists, non-governmental leaders, and globalist investors. Breivik advocated for focusing on individuals who did not have armed guards. Breivik belicved the manifesto would provide future "European Patriots" with "the tools required to win the ongoing Westem Cultural Westem European cultural war." The manifesto provides an incredibly detailed account of Breivik's planning and preparation prior to the attacks and was intended to serve as a blueprint for future single cell or "Lone Wolf" terrorist operations. From early 2017 through the date of his arrest, the defendant routinely perused portions of the Breivik manifesto that instruct a prospective assailant to amass appropriate firearms, food, disguises, and survival supplies. Consistent with the Breivik manifesto, the defendant performed thousands of visits to websites selling firearms and tactical gear. The defendant also researched 4:03 PM- 20 Feb 2019

The list included Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Senator Kamala Harris, Representative Beto O'Rourke, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, CNN journalists Chris Cuomo and Van Jones and more.

Law enforcement's discovery of the above items, as well as other items of evidentiary value, is unsurprising, given the previously-known information shown in rocords from inierstate shipping componics and fimancial institutions. In a statement, Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Barry Lane said, "An active duty Coast Guard member, stationed at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, was arrested last week on illegal weapons and drug charges as a result of an ongoing investigation led by the Coast Guard Investigative Service, in cooperation with the FBI and Department of Justice. Because this is an open investigation, the Coast Guard has no further details at this time."

Online Reaction

MSNBC's Chris Hayes, who was also included on Hasson's list, tweeted,[7] "There's a really persistent and unnerving obsession in many quarters of the right with a new civil war around the corner. It's become a fairly common theme. Shows up in the Hasson memo and, other places, too." The tweet received more than 2,300 retweets and 5,100 likes in 24 hours (shown below, left).

Guardian editor Jon Swaine tweeted,[8] "Christopher Hasson's emails suggest the recent radicalization of a dormant Nazi. Whining about 'liberalist/globalist ideology' destroying white America, '((((People))))' conspiring, Russia as new homeland. The idiom of the pro-Trump online far-right." The tweet received more than 295 retweets and 440 likes in 24 hours (shown below, center).

Some wondered why the Department of Justice was not reporting on the arrest. Crooked Media editor Brian Beutler tweeted,[9] "I hope we learn why DOJ arrested and charged Hasson without making a peep outside of charging documents. It is nearly certain Trump received a briefing on the action, and if he ordered DOJ to stay mum about it, we need to know." The tweet received more than 550 retweets and 1,300 likes in 24 hours (shown below, right). They continued, "I'm not sure how long it would've gone unnoticed, but I'm pretty sure that without the eagle-eyed work of @SeamusHughes, who also spotted the Assange charging screw up, we wouldn't know today."

That day, Twitter[10] published a Moments page on the arrest.
