Overview

Dance Gavin Dance Controversy or Tilian Pearson's Allegations refers to the announcement that the American rock band Dance Gavin Dance parted ways once again with lead singer Tilian Pearson after his 12-year run in the band in April 2024. Pearson previously stepped away from the band in June 2022 due to accusations of sexual misconduct and substance abuse problems. After receiving treatment, he was welcomed back in November 2022. Tilian Pearson's departure from the band became a viral topic on the internet, as fans expressed their thoughts about it and the alleged reasons why he left Dance Gavin Dance again.

Background

On June 1st, 2022, Revolver Magazine[1] revealed that Dance Gavin Dance vocalist Tilian Pearson stepped away from the band following sexual misconduct and substance abuse allegations. The article mentions Reddit[2][3] posts in which one fan alleged being forced to have sex with Pearson and another fan claims to have been sexually assaulted by him.

On June 3rd, the band's official X[4] account posted a statement announcing Tilian's indefinite hiatus from the group (shown below, left), saying "the recent allegations against Tilian are something we take very seriously, and we have been in deep discussion regarding the appropriate action," the statement read. The post amassed roughly 8,000 likes and 2,500 retweets in two years.

On November 10th, 2022, Pearson posted a statement on his X[5] account in which he apologized to fans and Dance Gavin Dance members about his misconduct and commented about his time in "rehabilitation." He also denied having any "kind of intimate relationship without the consent of a partner." The post (shown below, right) received more than 4,400 likes and 899 retweets in two years. After the post, Tilian Pearson rejoined the band.


The recent allegations against Tilian are something we take very seriously, and we have been in deep discussion regarding the appropriate action. Effective immediately, Tilian will be stepping away from the band in order to seek professional help. Jon, Will, Matt, and Andrew will continue on with all currently scheduled tours. The band will also be proceeding with the release of Jackpot Juicer as planned. We all worked incredibly hard on this album, and it is also the last recorded body of work from Tim - we want to be sure we give it the full release attention that it deserves to honor his legacy. We know that this is a very upsetting and trying situation for all those affected, and we ask people to please be as understanding as possible while everyone works through this. We appreciate you always. Love, Matt, Will, Jon, and Andrew I wanted to update everyone on what has been happening during my time away from Dance Gavin Dance. When the band was dealing with the tragic loss of one of our brothers, it could have brought us together, but instead, it sent me down a self-destructive path. I've spent the past few months in a rehab program for alcohol alongside an intensive series of therapy sessions to reassess my life and how I want to live it. It became clear to me and my bandmates that this is what had to happen for me to continue with the group, and I will always appreciate their understanding, support, and the time that they have given me to get my life together. I hate the power that I have allowed alcohol to have over my life. I want to apologize to the band and all of the fans of Dance Gavin Dance and assure you that my mistakes are purely my own and should never be a reflection on the other members. It's also important for me to address something that has been twisted and misrepresented during my absence from the band. The work I have done on myself and my substance abuse issues has nothing to do with any kind of sexual misconduct. I have never had sex or any kind of intimate relationship without the consent of a partner. I hope this clears up the events of the last few months, and I'm excited to reunite with the band and see all of you on the road in 2023.

Developments

April 2024 Dance Gavin Dance Parts Ways With Tilian Pearson Again

On April 15th, 2024, Dance Gavin Dance announced on Instagram[6] that they had parted ways once again with lead singer Tilian Pearson after his 12-year run in the band, and the group will move forward without him. The statement (shown below, left) amassed over 59,000 likes in a day.

Pearson also released a statement on Instagram[7] saying he had "had an absolute blast making songs and albums with this group of unbelievably talented dudes for the past 12 years." Pearson also announced he will continue to release music and is working on his solo project, called “Tilian.” The post received 18,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).


Dance Gavin Dance has always attempted to reconcile situations internally. But, after much consideration, we have as a collective decided to say farewell to our long time member and friend, Tilian. We wish him luck, along with our support and respect for his future endeavors in music and life. We thank him for his years of friendship and contribution during his time in Dance Gavin Dance. As people grow and change, creative differences can arise and life paths and goals may no longer align. We want to thank you for your support over the past two decades. We are truly grateful that we can continue to play music as a career and we are excited to move forward with this new era for the band. We had a truly unique connection with one of the most dynamic fan bases out there. I have nothing but gratitude for the lush and enigmatic experience we all got to share together in this era of Dance Gavin Dance. In more recent years, we were lucky enough to build relationships with the outstanding men and women that joined our touring crew. They were instrumental in making our shows larger than life, and I'll always cherish their part in what we were able to create. Now it's time for a new chapter. I will be focusing on making new music on a different canvas. I'm currently in the studio perfecting a new Tilian album and will be playing live shows to support it later this year. I know the future will hold new collaborations and new projects, so I hope that any of you I've connected with musically or poetically will lend your ears to the next melodic alchemy I intend on cooking up.
