Overview

#FireHannity is a hashtag campaign to have Fox News Reporter and TV Host Sean Hannity fired from Fox News for spreading misinformation to favor the Donald Trump administration, particularly with regards to Seth Rich's Death.

Background

Calls for firing Hannity have come since May of 2017 for his participation in the story of Seth Rich's Death. Media Matters[4] called for a boycott of Hannity on May 23rd. According the Newsweek,[1] a more official movement was launched with a website, FireHannity.org[2] by the Democratic Coalition in mid-June of 2017. The group launched a Twitter[3] account on June 29th, 2017. According to FireHannity.org, the campaign was launched after Hannity called for a boycott of MSNBC host Rachel Maddow's show. The group aims to get Hannity fired by pressuring advertisers on his show to cease advertising with Hannity, a tactic that helped contribute to the firing of Bill O'Reilly.

Developments

While initially, enthusiasm for the campaign was light (according to Newsweek,[1] the site only attracted about 100,000 visitors in its first month), the campaign gained momentum following Rod Wheeler's lawsuit against the Donald Trump administration for trying to push the conspiracy theories involved with Seth Rich's Death. The Seth Rich story had long been a fascination of Hannity, who reported conspiracy theories around the death often on his show. According to Lerner, since the launch of the campaign, 14 of the 150 advertisers on Hannity's show have ceased advertising with him.
