Joji Is Over

Overview

Joji Is Over, also known as #JojiIsOverParty, refers to a controversy surrounding several K-pop stan accounts criticizing musician Joji over his retired character Filthy Frank. The viral spread of the tweets resulted in the hashtag #JojiIsOverParty trending on Twitter, with users making fun of those not aware that Joji is Filthy Frank and those who criticized the artist over his use of racial slurs as the character.

Background

On May 7th, 2020, Twitter^[1] user @jaykaiiii tweeted "you sensitive bitches finna have a stroke when you find out how joji was back in 2013," with the tweet gaining over 19,700 retweets and 103,800 likes.

On May 8th, 2020, K-pop stan Twitter^[2] user @jinsoIbi tweeted "joji literally having a song where he says the n word with the hard er….," with the tweet gaining over 80 retweets and 500 likes in five days (shown below, left). In the thread,^[3] @jinsolbi posted clips of George Miller (Joji) using the racial slur as his Filthy Frank and Pink Guy characters, as well as dismissed those who pointed out the satirical context of the content (shown below, right). It is unclear whether Twitter account @jinsolbi, created on May 1st, 2020, is a troll account.

A number of users, majority of which were K-pop stan accounts, replied with disbelief that Joji and Filthy Frank were one person (tweets shown below).^[4][5][6]

Spread

On May 9th, the thread started gaining traction on Twitter, with users criticizing @jinsolbi and other participants of the thread, using #JojiIsOverParty in the posts. On May 9th, 2020, Twitter^[7] user @imcoffeebeanz posted the earliest viral tweet using the hashtag, gaining over 160 retweets and over 2,300 likes in four days (shown below, left). The hashtag and the debate received further spread after on May 10th, 2020, Twitter^[8] user @Emerald_dll posted screenshots of @jinsolbi's tweets, with the post gaining over 14,600 retweets and 105,400 likes in three days ( post shown below, right).

Following @Emerald_dll's viral tweet, the debate gained widespread attention on Twitter, with users poking fun at the Joji/Filthy Frank critics and K-pop fans. On May 10th, 2020, Twitter^[9] user @tdizon1903 posted a screenshot of his Twitter exchange with @jinsolbi which revealed that she used a racial slur against him and blocked him (shown below, left). On May 11th, 2020, Twitter^[10] user @AskookTheMess made a joke about the musician and artist Donald Glover which received over 600 retweets and 6,600 likes in two days (shown below, center).

In addition to Twitter, the debate received spread on Facebook. For example, on May 11th, Facebook^[11] user Query Miller made a post urging others to draw a difference between Joji and his Filthy Frank character which received over 1,200 reactions and 1,900 shares in two days. On May 12th, Facebook^[12] user Jericho Mercado posted a "Printer Go Brrr" meme which received over 2,200 reactions and 9,500 shares in one day.
