Overview

The Beating Of Sergio Berni refers to an attack on the Security Minister of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sergio Berni, in April 2023. The politician was beaten with blows, kicks and stones by a group of bus drivers enraged by the death of one of their colleagues in a robbery that took place in the early hours of the same day. The moment of the beating trended on social with the term in Spanish La Golpiza A Sergio Berni, inspiring Photoshopped images, memes and other media formats mocking the politician and the surrounding incident.

Background

On April 3rd, 2023, a conflict occurred between a number of enraged bus drivers and Buenos Aries, Argentina's Security Minister Sergio Berni. The workers were protesting the murder of a colleague during an assault. Berni, who was accompanied by security guards, had appeared at the place where bus drivers were protesting against insecurity[2] in the La Matanza area of ​​Buenos Aires. Allegedly, he tried to talk with the workers, but as soon as he arrived, he was greeted with insults and the situation intensified quickly, leading to punches against Berni, who was injured in the face. On April 4th, 2023, the Twitter account of the international news agency @reuters[1] shared a video of the bus drivers beating up Berni. The video (seen below) garnered 63,800 views and 389 likes in a day (warning, graphic content).
