Overview

Neymar’s Cruise Ship or Cruzeiro do Neymar in Portuguese refers to a cruise ship vacation promoted by the Brazilian footballer Neymar Jr. called “Ney Em Alto Mar.” The three-day cruise started on December 26th, 2023, and became a trending topic on the internet, generating memes, jokes, gossip and parody videos on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter / X.

Background

“Ney Em Alto Mar” is the name of the project[1] led by the Brazilian footballer Neymar Jr. in which he seeks to take tourists on a three-day cruise through his country. He first announced the cruise on May 29th, 2023, and on June 3rd, 2023 he uploaded a teaser video on his YouTube[2] channel to promote the cruise. The video (shown below) amassed over 578,000 views and 14,000 likes in seven months.

Stolen Jewelry Rumor

On December 28th, 2023, as Neymar’s cruise was on its second day at the sea, some guests shared on social media that their jewelry was stolen in the morning. X[3] user @mahagess shared screenshots of Instagram stories posted by two funk singers expected to perform on the cruise ship in which they complain about jewelry missing from their cabins. The post (shown below) amassed over 7.9 million views and 48,000 likes in a day.

The tweet was quickly widespread on social media and on the same day it was revealed to be a promotional ad for an upcoming Netflix TV show Berlim. The Brazilian Netflix account on X[4] shared two images of a character wearing the “stolen” jewelry (shown below), which garnered roughly 2,200 likes and 166 retweets in a day.

Neymar’s cruise ship became a trending topic on the internet, as people shared inside intel about influencers, sub-celebrities and other moments that occurred on the cruise. For instance, on December 29th, 2023, X[5] user @nicox2n shared a video paired with the caption “me leaving Neymar's cruise very slowly so the jewelry I stole wouldn't fall out of my ass,” which received roughly 54,000 views and 2,900 likes in a few hours.



On December 28th, 2023, X[6] user @souoprince_ shared a video of man wearing a lot of jewelry paired with the caption “me at the bottom of the ship,” which revived more than 26,000 views and 1,300 likes in a day.
