Overview
Orange Arrow Hunger Games, also known as /r/dankmemes Hunger Games, refers to an April Fools upvote competition between 21 teams which took place on April 1st, 2019 in /r/dankmemes subreddit.
Background
On March 27th, 2019, /r/dankmemes moderator siouxsie_siouxv2 announced that subreddit would start banning European users due to the passing of Article 13. [1]
ALL EU BASED r/dankmemes USERS WILL BE BANNED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
On March 28th, Redditor EuropeanUser69 made a post in /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit, inquiring about the bans.[2] In the replies, several users speculated that the announcement could have been a joke. On March 29th, Redditor Okora reported that the bans affected non-European users as well.[3]
Notable Developments
On March 31st, /r/dankmemes moderator siouxsie_siouxv2 announced Orange Arrow Hunger Games, an event in which 25,000 /r/dankmemes subscribers, divided into 21 teams, would take part in a subreddit-wide competition.[4] Those users banned in the previous days were revealed to be the ones chosen to take part in the event.
/r/dankmemes will be restricted to these 25k users for 24 hours, and during that time, we would direct those of you wishing to comment or post about this event to go to /r/OrangeArrow.
The selected 25,000 users were invited to compete for the first place by posting the memes on /r/dankmemes which would get the most upvotes from the subscriber base. The team which would place first would be awarded Reddit Platinum and Gold on behalf of /r/dankmemes mod team, as well as granted to right to choose special flairs for themselves and the losing teams. The event officially started on March 31st, 20:00 EST.[5]
One of the teams, participating under number 7, chose to adopt name Fortnite after the popular battle royale video game.[6] As a result in multiple memes from those taking part in the competition ridiculing the team. The team later changed their name to The Monty Pythons.[7]
On April 2nd, the winner of the event was revealed to be Team 3 which managed to gain over 235,000 upvotes within 24 hours.[8] Teams 2 and 7 placed second and third, respectively.
