Tommy Lee's Dick Pic refers to a dick pic posted on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook by Mötley Crüe's drummer Tommy Lee in August 2022. The photograph was removed from Instagram and Facebook within hours of being posted, but remains on Twitter and inspired numerous reactions and memes. The post also inspired criticism for how long it took to get deleted, some seeing it as an example of double standards on social media and suggesting if a woman posted a similar photo it would be deleted much quicker.

History

On August 11th, 2022, Tommy Lee posted a photo to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter^[1] of himself completely naked sitting on what appears to be the edge of a bathtub with his legs spread, his penis in full view (censored version shown below). The photo was removed from Instagram and Facebook hours after it was posted but remains on Twitter, where it gained over 27,500 likes and 3,600 retweets in a day.

After the photo was posted, Lee made several posts referencing it. On the same day, he posted a meme to Instagram^[2] showing an elephant looking at a naked man, captioned, "How do you breathe through that little thing??" garnering over 53,000 likes in a day. Later that day he posted an edited version of the dick pic to Instagram,^[3] garnering over 81,000 likes in under a day. The photo received media attention from sites including TMZ^[4] and People^[5] that day.

On the same day, Cosmopolitan^[6] published an article about the post where the writer expresses shock that the penis was up for at least five hours, suggesting that women, "especially those who are plus-size or not white," have their topless photos removed from Instagram much faster. She writes, "Basically, a whole tonne of photos, which are the exact opposite of a straight-up d*ck pic from a musician, have been branded unacceptable. And the only difference that I can see is… gender, and skin tone." She also discusses how the comments under the post were making jokes, suggesting a woman posting a similar photo would be slut-shamed for it.

Explanation

On August 22nd, 2022, Tommy Lee posted a video to Twitter^[7] (@MrTommyLand) taken at a concert. In the video, Lee tells the audience that he was on a bender when he posted the picture, eliciting cheers from the crowd. He then jokingly asks the men in the audience to take their penises out in tribute to the post, although nobody appears to (shown below). The video gained over 1,500 likes in three days.

The post inspired reactions and memes across social media, many joking about the size of Lee's penis and the shameless posting of the photo across social media accounts. On the day it was posted, Instagram^[8] user gothsdoingthings posted an image macro of Lee captioned, "I survived the Tommy Lee dong post of 2022," garnering over 7,900 likes in a day (shown below, left). On the same day, Twitter^[9] user @Vela_Dead posted an image of a rat that looks like a penis, captioned, "For those who missed the Tommy Lee post, here it is," garnering over 5,100 likes and 400 retweets in a day (shown below, right).

On the same day, Instagram^[10] page pedestriantv posted an image macro showing Lee next to Andrew Tate, captioned, "It’s Fkd Women Are Routinely Scrubbed From IG But Tommy Lee & Andrew Tate Can Pollute Our Feed," linking to an article^[11] on the topic and suggesting double standards are at play.
