Overview
Unus Annus Channel Shutdown refers to a YouTube channel that was deleted by popular YouTubers Markiplier and CrankGameplays [1][2][3]. They deleted the channel during a live stream on November 14th 2020, with lots of people reuploading the stream or reacting to Markiplier and CrankGameplays deleting their channel on the livestream. The twist of the channel is that it will be deleted after one year and all the content will be gone ("Unus Annus" translates to "one year" in Latin).
Background
On November 13th 2020, Unus Annus posted an 11 hour livestream in which they talk about why the channel is deleting and reacting to their old videos. The livestream ended the same time when the channel was deleted. After the channel was deleted and the live stream ended, Other YouTubers was posting the full live stream and making edits (popular livestream re-upload shown below). [4]
Developments
As it's deleted channel on YouTube, people joked about the channel not being deleted or reacting to the channel being deleted with reaction images. On October 24th, 2020, Game Theory or MatPat posted a game theory (shown below) titled Game Theory: The Hidden Code of Unus Annus (Markiplier & CrankGamePlays) In which he explains the channel and why they deleted it. The theory hit 3.9 million views in 9 months. [5]
On November 14th, Twitter user Brooke Heart (BrookeHeart5) Brooke Heart tweeted an image of the livestream with 1,497,192 people watching the livestream (shown below) with the caption "This is what I saw on my TV once the goodbye stream was over. Also, I just noticed that there were 1,497,912 people watching the stream when it ended. That's incredible. #UnusAnnus." [6]
On November 15, Markiplier [7] uploaded a video titled "Unus Annus – Post Mortem" in which Markiplier discussed the history on Unus Annus (shown below, left). Within 24 hours, the video gained over 6.1 million views and 78,257 comments. On the same day, CrankGameplays [8] uploaded a video titled "The End of Unus Annus" in which CrankGameplays explained his memories on Unus Annus. The video gained over 2.1 million views and 53,986 comments (shown below, right).
On November 14, YouTuber Cr1tikal released a video commenting on the situation that received over 1.7 million views in less than a day (shown below).[9]
