Awa Awa refers to a chibi character, distinctive by his simplistic design and his big eyes, drawn by Egnillo in 2022. This character was the basis for many redraw memes on social media. Its copious appearance in Fototeta memes has led many internauts to mistakenly believe that it was its name.

Origin

Some time in 2022, online artist Egnillo posted a drawing of a woman and a comically cartoonish man, looking up at her. In the bottom of the picture, the woman looks annoyed as the man offers a wedding ring to her.

Fototeta Versions

On February 22nd, 2023, online artist Zueru (@artofzue) uploaded on his Twitter^[1] and Tumblr^[2] accounts an animation (see below) between two of his original characters, a male rat and a female anthropomorphic goat, in the vein of the meme Fototeta, with the rat asking a "titty pic" from the goat. One of the highlights from the animation is the rat being redrawn from Egnillo's character. This animation gained over 42,000 likes and 10,000 retweets on Twitter, and was liked over 180 times and reblogged 110 times on Tumblr. Its popularity led to many other redraws of Egnillo's character, most of them mistakenly associating him to the Fototeta meme. Eventually, on November 1st, 2023, Egnillo made a post on Twitter^[3] in order to publically state that they were at the origin of this meme.
