About

Face Swapping Myself 10 Times or Face Swap With Myself 10 Times is a TikTok trend where participants use the app FaceApp to face swap themselves with their own face, often getting horrifying caricatures of themselves as a result. While FaceApp has been prevalent since 2018, the trend began towards the end of August 2022 and continued into September as TikTokers attempted it on their own faces and posted the results.

Origin

On April 12th, 2021, TikToker[1] @matthewsantoro posted a video where he face swapped himself with his own face 10 times. He received a final product commenters called "an intruder," "a police sketch" and "British." The post received over 100,000 plays and 10,000 likes in roughly a year and a half (seen below)

The video was then reposted by TikToker @shaelynne11,[2] who became the host sound for subsequent adopters of the trend. This post received over 900,000 plays and 90,000 likes in nearly a month (seen below)

As the trend went on to gain virality, creators began to notice that face swapping themselves sometimes exaggerated their features in a racially insensitive way. For example, on September 25th, TikToker[5] @shyhemepierre posted a video participating in this trend with a caption that read, "Okay this gotta be racist 😂🤷🏽‍♂️." The post gathered over 3 million plays and over 300,000 likes in three days (seen below, left). TikToker @alluringskull[6] posted a similar video on September 27th, calling his face-swapped face a "minstrel show." His post gathered over 1.5 million views and 260,000 likes in a day (seen below, right).
