Family Laughing At Crying Child Opening Christmas Present refers to an AI-generated image of a child weeping upon opening a Christmas present while his family laughs and gives him middle fingers. The image has been used as an exploitable, with the gift being changed to something that would greatly disappoint the child.

Origin

On December 19th, 2023, Michael Maxwell of the Facebook group Cursed AI[7] posted an AI-generated image of a child opening a Christmas present with the message "Santa isn't real LOL," weeping while the family around him laughs and gives him the middle finger (shown below). The post is credited to a user named "Danny Danny." It was reposted by Twitter user gonzotrucker[1] later that morning, and gained over 290 retweets and 2,000 likes in eight days.

Later on December 19th, 2023, the image was posted to the Instagram[2] account @hardaipics, where it gained over 66,0000 likes in eight days. Exploitable variations began appearing over the following days. On December 20th, Instagram[3] account @bigfatsnaredrum posted an edit where the "present" reads "We sold your drums," gaining over 13,000 likes in seven days (shown below, left). The same day, Twitter[4] user @MisplayMental posted an edit that gained over 19 retweets and 200 likes in the same timeframe (shown below, right).

The image has also been used for various fandom memes, usually showing a child being upset at receiving something bad from an artist or sports team. For example, on December 23rd, Twitter[5] user @tgcharlton posted an example with a less-beloved Depeche Mode album, gaining over 18 retweets and 150 likes in four days (shown below, left). The same day, Instagram[6] account brick.mafia posted an example where the child receives a toy from the Star Wars sequels, gaining over 5,300 likes in the same time frame (shown below, right).
