About

Fat Chinese Baby refers to an image macro meme showing a sleeping baby lying on his side. The viral photo was popularized on X / Twitter and TikTok in late 2023, with many internet users commenting on the baby's seemingly unusual proportions, particularly his head which appears comically large compared to his body. The image of the large baby laying on a blue blanket first appeared on the Chinese social media site Xiaohongshu under the account ID number 753455130, seemingly posted by his mother.

Origin

Images of the Fat Chinese Baby began to appear on Western social media in July 2023, although it is likely that the photos were prior posted to Xiaohongshu under the account ID number 753455130. The photos showed a baby lying on his side in the fetal position with his head appearing large compared to the rest of his body.

A July 2nd, 2023, post on the Instagram^[1] page @babies.snap shows several images of the Fat Chinese Baby (seen below, top), with the X^[2] account @pondexplorer reposting the image on July 14th, adding, "I can't get over it like what the fuck is this thing." The post gathered over 114,000 likes in seven months (seen below, bottom).

The Instagram^[3] page @skinnycity reposted the image on July 27th, 2023, saying, "this is me sleeping," gathering over 11,000 likes in seven months. On December 6th, 2023, the X^[4] account @wockheedmartin reposted the image of the baby alongside a photo of a burrito, saying, "I had a dream I ate the fat chinese baby like a chipotle burrito." The post gathered over 10,000 likes in a month (seen below, left).

On December 14th, X^[5] user @ozlako posted an image of another infant with sneakers on his feet alongside the Fat Chinese Baby, saying, "FAT CHINESE BABY ON ITS SIDE has finally been dethroned as chillest fucking baby, how do we feel about this⁉️⁉️" The post gathered over 16,000 likes in a month (seen below, right).

On December 18th, 2023, X^[6] user @wifrieren posted an image of a cat posed like the baby, saying, "someone turned Fat Chinese Baby into a cat," gathering over 13,000 likes in three weeks (seen below, left). On January 12th, 2024, the X^[7] account @M1das_OW2 posted the image of the baby alongside a puppy, saying, "they would be friends." The post gathered over 44,000 likes in a day (seen below, right).
