About

Frontier Psychiatrist is a song from The Avalanches' debut album Since I Left You, which was released on November 27th, 2000. The song was first released as a single on August 21st, 2000. In 2009, a music video of the song went viral on YouTube and inspired several fan remakes.

Origin

The first music video of the song was released on the Australian music television program Rage[1] (shown below). It was a simple video of a boy visiting a psychiatrist and reading inkblots. This version has since been deleted in its original upload, but a reupload by BasilBrushEsq[2] on April 7th, 2021, still exists.

The music video was completely redone when the song was re-released in the UK. It featured actors performing the song's lyrics on a stage. A promotional Mini-DVD of this music video was released in March 2002. The music video was also posted to YouTube[3] by XL Recordings on November 30th, 2009, and has over 20 million views (shown below). The earliest postings of the music video to YouTube were in 2005 when the site first started, but have since been deleted or merged.

Spread

The first spread of the song was in 2005 on the site YTMND, where one of the song's lyrics, "That boy needs therapy", was combined with various animated GIFs.

On September 7th, 2006, a flash cartoon of the song was posted to Albino Blacksheep.[4] The flash, titled "Frontier Insanity,"[5] was created by shutupdangit. On July 29th, 2009, the music video was reanimated in Flash and posted to YouTube[6] by Nick Shoen. The video (shown below) has over 270,000 views.

On August 3rd, 2015, the music video was reanimated in Source Filmmaker using characters and assets from Team Fortress 2 and posted on YouTube[7] by Bonk!aholic, gaining 20,000 views in six years (shown below).

On November 30th, 2020, a reanimated version of the music video was posted to YouTube[8] by Hrab (shown below). It was a collaboration between 70 artists and animators and has over 110,000 views.
