Shitting Toothpaste, also known as Pooping Toothpaste, refers to a CGI of a toothpaste tube character that looks as if it's forcibly excreting paste from its underside while making a strained face. Created in late 2016 by FOREAL, it was used as an additional punchline in another image before appearing in memes over the following years.

Origin

Around late 2016, German design studio FOREAL uploaded a CGI image titled "Toothpaste" that included the "Shitting Toothpaste" character. Unfortunately, around 2020, the image was removed from the site before someone archived it on archive.org^[1] (shown below). Several blog posts describing FOREAL still exist however, such as an article on Adobe's^[11] website that includes the character.

On August 6th, 2019, an anonymous 4chan user uploaded a four-panel comic of a couple who breaks up in the last panel, with the image changed to "toothpaste shitting itself" and asking where the original comic was from. On December 31st, 2020, Reddit user zuccccccc uploaded the screenshot of it to the /r/comedyheaven^[2] subreddit, receiving more than 83,000 upvotes in six months (shown below).

That same day, Redditor Dark_Diggler uploaded a video version of the image to the /r/okbuddyretard^[3] subreddit, receiving more than 21,800 upvotes in six months (shown below).

Spread

On July 4th, 2019, YouTube user Iafonax^[8] then uploaded a video titled "Toothpaste shit." The video received more than 10,000 views in two years (shown below, left). On September 25th, 2019, a now-deleted Redditor uploaded a low-resolution version of the image to /r/blursedimages^[10] subreddit and received more than 1,600 upvotes in six months (shown below, right). A year later, Redditor RobotGetsTerminated uploaded the higher quality 4chan screenshot to the /r/196^[4] subreddit and received more than 11,000 upvotes in six months.

While the original comic was found (unknown author), many Redditors prefer the "shitting toothpaste" version. For example, on December 31st, 2020, and January 3rd, 2021, Redditor Vibe_with_Kira and real_The_Rogue uploaded the original version of the comic to the /r/im14andthisisdeep^[5] and /r/cringetopia^[6] subreddit. Some commenters agreed that they prefer the "shitting toothpaste" than the original (screenshots below, left). On May 25th, 2021, Redditor lolman9999 uploaded same response to the /r/196^[7] subreddit, receiving more than 19,900 upvotes in one week (shown below, right)

Starting in May 2021, the image was used as the punchline for another image online. For example, on May 26th, 2021, Redditor toadipixel uploaded a Haha Jonathan, You Are Banging My Daughter meme to the /r/shitposting^[9] subreddit. The image received 360 upvotes in six days (shown below).
