About
Going for the Golden SCAR refers to a series of ironic Fortnite memes in which players abandon their teammates and other objectives for the sole purpose of picking up the Golden SCAR weapon. Spawned by the same Patrick Star meme being spammed on iFunny, the ironic trend gained virality on the app in early April 2022.
Origin
Prior to April 18th, 2018, during the initial peak of Fortnite popularity, the now-suspended Twitter[1] account @FortniteHumor posted an image caption meme based on an edited image from SpongeBob SquarePants of Patrick running away from a fallen teammate, captioned, "When your team needs reviving but you see a gold scar," with Golden SCAR being a powerful Fortnite weapon. On April 18th, 2018, the image (shown below) was included in a Buzzfeed[2] collection of Fortnite memes, with the meme actively reposted by meme communities on Facebook[3][4] and other websites in the following years.
The image did not spawn a meme until in early April 2022, ironic posting of Fortnite memes became popularized on iFunny. Starting on April 2nd, 2022, multiple iFunny[5][6][7][8][9][10][11] users, including SWARGG, SnakeBaked, Herobrine_, Crawlz, DrGoodGuy, deflated and sicilian_maxing all posted the image, filling the Collective tab for users. On April 3rd, 2022, iFunny[12] user kj52mountaindew posted a screen recording of their Collective tab being filled with the same meme (shown below).
Spread
Starting on April 3rd, 2022, the post inspired ironic memes in which Fortnite players abandoned their teammates and other objectives for the purpose of grabbing a Golden SCAR. For example, iFunny[13] user SoapierV3 posted an American Psycho video caption meme, which gained over 560 smiles in five days (shown below, left). On April 4th, iFunny[14] user SWARGG posted a GIF caption meme that received 280 smiles (shown below, right).
In the following days, the ironic trend continued on the app. For example, on April 4th, 2022, iFunny[15] user GarfieldsFavoriteLasagna posted an Interstellar meme that gained over 1,000 smiles in three days (shown below, left). On the same day, iFunny[16] user SnakeBaked posted a SpongeGar Choosing meme that received over 2,700 smiles in three days (shown below, right).
