About

Fortnite Music Blocks are a gameplay feature in the online multiplayer game Fortnite available in Creative Mode. When activated by a player, the blocks produce a specific music tone in a similar fashion to Minecraft's note block. Since the addition to the game, the feature has been used by players to recreate popular songs and compose original music in the game.

Origin

On January 29th, 2019, game developer Epic Games released update 7.30[1] for its online multiplayer game Fortnite. The updated introduced several additions for the Fortnite Creative Mode, including a new item category named Music Blocks. The addition allowed players to create and play music in the game by arranging special pads designed to produce an assigned musical note when activated.

In the following days, music remixes in which player reproduced popular musical composition in the game were posted on Reddit, YouTube and other platforms. For example, on February 1st, 2019, YouTuber[2] Grandayy posted a Fortnite remix of "Crab Rave" by Noisestorm (shown below, left) which gained over 1.5 million views in four days. A remix of "Bitch Lasagna" by PewDiePie, posted by Grandayy on February 3rd, 2019, received over 540,000 views in two days.

Following the update, many notable remixes and original compositions were posted to /r/FortniteCreative[3] subreddit. On February 1st, Reddit[4] user math2607 posted a Fortnite remix of Megalovania by Toby Fox to /r/FortniteCreative subreddit. The post gained over 1,900 upvotes in four days.

On February 2nd, YouTuber[5] Hypex posted a compilation of remixes and original music compositions created in the game by various users. The video gained over 5.7 million views in three days.

The addition of the music blocks, as well as the musical compositions created by Fortnite players, were featured by several news outlets, including Dexerto[6], Kotaku[7], PC Gamer[8] and MSN[9].
