About
Green Selena Gomez refers to a series of reaction videos featuring a color-edited video interview with actor and singer Selena Gomez. In the video, Gomez expresses her own self-confidence, which has been used as the punchline to various jokes about believing in oneself and perseverance.
Origins
On April 29th, 2016, E! News[1] published an interview with Gomez in which she said, "No matter what people perceive of me, I always shine through at the end of the day. So, I’ve had a lot of people try to tear me down, but I’m here, and I have always been myself and I’ve always wanted that. And I’ve been graceful" (mirror below).
Three years later, on April 24th, 2019, Twitter user @seIenalusts tweeted a version of the video in which Gomez's skin is green. They captioned the image, "the color green when selena chose to have some blue going on instead since she likes a little edge and a little pop in her hair especially for the teen vogue party." The post received more than 200 retweets, 880 likes and 2.5 million views (shown below).

Over the next week, others began posting variations of the meme by changing the colors. For example, on April 28th, Twitter[3] user @alezander tweeted, "pineapple after getting removed from a slice of pizza." Twitter[4] user @selenalusts tweeted, "the demon in paranormal activity when people tried to get rid of it." In this case, the video looks like a security camera. The post received more than 530 retweets and 1,800 likes two days (shown below, right).
On May 1st, the website PopBuzz[5] published an article about the videos.
