About
Hermann Gottlieb's Double Event Speech is a memorable monologue from the 2013 movie Pacific Rim, in which a scientist explains how Kaijus (the film's giant sea monsters) are appearing at ever-increasing frequencies. A multi-panel version of the scene came to be used as a snowclone and an exploitable meme in the early 2020s to joke about things happening at exponential rates.
Origin
The film Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro, was released on July 12th, 2013. The film followed humanity's attempts to stave off giant sea monsters called "Kaijus" with the help of manned giant robots.
Toward the start of the film, Kaiju scientist Dr. Hermann Gottlieb explains how Kaijus were appearing out of the sea at exponential rates, initially spaced out by 24 weeks, then 12 weeks, then six, then two, and so on.[1]
A transcript of the monologue is shown below.
In the beginning, the Kaiju attacks were spaced by 24 weeks. Then twelve, then six, then every two weeks. The last one in Sydney was a week. In four days, we could be seeing a Kaiju every eight hours, until they are coming every four minutes. Marshal, we should witness a double event within seven days.
The earliest known iteration of the meme was posted to Reddit's[2] /r/Warhammer40K forum by /u/Aaron_B_Knight on July 12th, 2020, where it gathered over 5,000 upvotes in four years.
