Hey Watson, Cinder Block is a viral video where a man throws a prop cinder block at his son, yelling, "Hey Watson, cinder block," before the toss. The video was posted to TikTok in November 2020 and went viral in 2022 through reposts, inspiring reactions, recreations of the video and memes referencing it.

Origin

On November 7th, 2020, TikToker[1] @scottpropandroll, a prop maker for movies and TV, posted a video showcasing a rubber cinder block prop. He throws the cinder block at his son Watson as he scooters by, yelling, "Hey Watson, cinder block" before the throw. The block bounces off Watson (shown below). The video gained over 350,000 views in roughly two years.

Spread

The video gained viral spread over the following months, often cut to just show Watson getting hit with the block. In December 2021 the video was reuploaded to YouTube,[2] gaining over 79,000 views in six months. On February 23rd, 2022, YouTuber[3] StanleyMOV Clips, a highlight channel for Twitch streamer StanleyMOV, posted a clip from the stream where Stanley references the meme, gaining over 7,500 views in four months (shown below, left). On April 6th, YouTuber[4] Jimmy Here referenced the clip in a You Laugh, You Lose video, gaining over 1.6 million views in two months (shown below, right).



That same day on April 6th, 2022, YouTuber[5] Casly Animations posted an animation based on the video, gaining over 1,500 views in two months. On June 11th, @scottpropandroll posted a video to TikTok[6] explaining the backstory of the viral video, gaining over 1.6 million views in three days (shown below).
