About
High Meat Trend, also known as the Fermented Meat Trend or Fermented Raw Beef Trend, refers to a social media food trend in which people eat raw meat that has been left to ferment and rot for months, even years, claiming the meat sparks feelings of euphoria. The trend has been discussed online since as early as 2019 but gained viral attention in April 2021 on X / Twitter as people shared their “cooking methods” for the high meat, often enclosing it into jars to ferment. In late January 2025, the trend resurfaced on Reddit and X, spawning videos of people eating raw meat and allegedly getting “high” from it.
Origin
On March 26th, 2019, Redditor[1] 100orangepikmin posted one of the earliest mentions about the “rotten meat” trend, asking people on the /r/carnivore subreddit, “How does one transition into eating (edit: fermented meat) rotten meat? Sounds about as difficult as eating feces. I can't imagine it.” The post (seen below) amassed roughly 10 upvotes and 60 comments in six years.

On January 5th, 2020, YouTuber[3] do it posted an animated video titled “How to make High Meat,” which amassed more than 13,000 views and 136 likes in five years.
Spread
The “ferment meat” trend gained viral attention over the years as it spread online. Vice[2] wrote an article on it on May 4th, 2021, explaining how the “high meat” trend works with a quote from Naras Lapsys, a Singapore-based consultant dietitian, suggesting that “the high could come from ‘a whole range’ of bacteria thriving in the raw meat.”
On April 12th, 2021, Twitter / X[5] user @DKexer replied to a tweet about raw meat discussing their foray into eating "raw rotten meat (high meat)," including a picture of the bacteria-covered beef, receiving over 10 likes, 15 replies and 25 reposts in three years.

The trend resurfaced on Reddit and X[4] in late January 2025 after a video of man eating a fermented meat stocked for months inside a jar went viral. The video features content creator, anti-vaxxer and Instagram[8] user @scottlivez, who often posts his "primal diet" that includes raw and fermented meats.
Redditor[6] DblockDavid shared the video to the /r/WTF subreddit on January 26th, 2025, which amassed over 2,200 upvotes and 720 comments in a month (seen below).
