About
Hitler Particles is a pejorative slang term used by internet users to describe the aura radiating from a bigoted opinion online. The origin of the phrase is thought to be a Leon Trotsky quote about a "particle of Hitler" being in every petty bourgeois person. The use of the term grew on X after 2022, sometimes accompanied by a reaction image depicting a scanner device reading "HITLER PARTICLE EMISSION CONFIRMED."
Origin
The earliest known post to use the phrase "Hitler Particle" is an October 9th, 2010, X / Twitter post[1] by user @spicymchaggus that read, "There's still bits of incinerated Hitler in the atmosphere; everyone has Hitler particles in their lungs" (seen below). The post resurfaced in 2022, as indicated by all the replies being from that year.
On July 31st, 2022, X[2] user @DailyTrotsky posted a quote by Russian revolutionary and Soviet politician Leon Trotsky. The post read, "Not every exasperated petty bourgeois could have become Hitler, but a particle of Hitler is lodged in every exasperated petty bourgeois." The post is generally thought to be the origin of the phrase "Hitler Particles," as acknowledged in various posts.[3][4][5] The quote was originally published in Trotsky's 1933 essay "What Is National Socialism."[6]
The use of the phrase "Hitler Particles" to describe posts perceived as racist or bigoted on X grew in late 2022, as seen in an October 19th post[7] by user @lmNOTcatholic (seen below, left) and an October 27th post[8] by @MissPavIichenko (seen below, right).
