Hobama or Harry Styles and Barack Obama Fanfiction refers to fanfiction written about Britsh singer Harry Styles and former United States President Barack Obama. The fanfictions started after a 2014 fake headline cover went viral on Twitter romantically shipping Obama and Styles. The fake relationship inspired many fanfictions over the year and gained more notoriety in April 2023 as TikTok users posted fan edit videos of the fictional couple.

Origin

On December 10th, 2014, Twitter^[1] user @amaraconda posted a National Examiner newspaper cover with the headline "Obama Hid Gay Lifestyle To Be President!" alongside a picture of the former One Direction singer Harry Styles. The tweet has since been deleted and proven fake^[2] shortly after the cover was photoshopped (original vs. fake cover seen below).

A few months later, on February 1st, 2015, a fanfiction inspired by the fake newspaper cover was then posted on Wattpad by user @ace-of-dorks.^[3] The story narrates a moment of intimacy between Barack Obama and Harry Styles while Michele Obama was out. The fanfic received 2,400 views and 124 comments in nine years.

Several other fanfictions were posted on Wattpad based on the duo over the following years since the 2014 fake news went viral. For instance, on September 16th, 2015, Wattpad^[4] user @HeartOfTheAspects uploaded a series of short stories titled "Hobama ~ City Lights" revolving around the relationship between Obama and Styles. The fanfic garnered 32,900 views and 1,100 votes in eight years.

Hobama TikTok Fan Edits

Around July 2021, fan edit videos inspired by the 2014 "Hobama" fanfiction started to be posted on TikTok. For example, TikToker^[5] @snlharrys uploaded a video on July 22nd, 2021, showing a fake text message interaction between Obama and Styles. The post (seen below, left) garnered 1.3 million plays and 319,000 likes in two years. On April 1st, 2023, TikToker @hobamafanpage^[6] posted a video about "Hobama" with the ironic caption "Love that they found their way back." The video (seen below, right) received 1.3 million plays and 259,000 likes in one month.
