Hold On, This Whole Operation Was Your Idea is a famous line uttered by Anakin Skywalker to Obi-Wan Kenobi in the 2005 movie Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The line grew popular in the Prequel Memes community online, especially as a reaction image and retort toward situations in which people seem to switch blame or not account for their own behavior.

Origin

The line itself is said by Anakin Skywalker (played by Hayden Christensen) during a conversation with Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Ewan McGregor). The line was uploaded to YouTube as early as 2020 (shown below).

Spread

The line began growing popular in the Prequel Memes community beginning roughly in mid-2019. One of the earliest known examples of the meme was posted to /r/prequelmemes^[1] by Redditor yohtha on August 5th, gaining over 750 points in three and a half years (shown below, left). On August 29th, Redditor thacarter72 posted an example to the subreddit^[2] referencing the Storm Area 51 event, gaining over 1,600 points in three and a half years (shown below, right)

Over time, the meme began being used in more creative ways. For example, on February 24th, 2020, Redditor Diskamei posted a photograph of them using the meme in a school presentation, gaining over 3,400 points^[4] (shown below, left). On April 17th, 2021, user MyrtisCrooker posted a variation using Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, gaining over 21,000 points in two years^[3] (shown below, right).
