Hopital, also known as the Hopital Meme, is an internet slang term derived from a humorous misspelling of the word "hospital." The misspelling was first used on Tumblr and is featured in the original You're Not Ascending to Godhood, You're Just Dehydrated exploitable meme.

Use of the term "hopital" subsequently spread to other social media platforms such as TikTok, Reddit and X / Twitter in the following years, typically as a simple response to someone asking for medical help or as a humorous follow-up to another post in which someone is described as engaging in risky activities.

Origin

On October 10th, 2023, Tumblr^[1] user Kalgalen posted, "you’re not ascending to godhood you’re just dehydrated," garnering over 140,000 notes in eight months.

The following day, on October 11th, Tumblr^[2] user podcastwizard then made two replies to the post, writing, "outta my way gayboy I'm boutta liberate my divine self from this mortal shell," followed by simply, "hopital." The Tumblr post is the earliest known example of the slang term and typo, which spawned the meme over the following months.

Spread

The slang term "hopital" spread in conjunction with the "You're Not Ascending to Godhood" post, which was screenshotted and gained viral spread in the following months.

For example, on November 13th, 2023, TikToker^[3] @bodgless posted a voiceover of the original meme, garnering over 1.9 million views and 329,200 likes in about two and a half years.

As the screenshot continued to spread in the following years, the word "hopital" entered regular use as a playful replacement for the actual word "hospital."

On October 20th, 2025, Redditor fetusfromspace posted a screenshot of "hopital" being used in the /r/comedyheaven^[4] subreddit, which received 36,000 upvotes in about seven months.

On October 25th, 2025, the /r/hopital^[5] subreddit was created, which is dedicated to the meme. As of early June 2026, the subreddit accumulated nearly 2,000 members.

The subreddit contains numerous examples of posts and memes using the slang, such as a repost from Tumblr shared on December 17th, 2025, that garnered over 1,100 upvotes and 10 comments in six months.
