I Give You Fire, You Give Me Rock is a video remix series based on a 2000s Dairy Queen commercial. In the advertisement, two cavemen make a deal, exchanging rock for a lit torch. After the cavemen trade objects, the caveman that received the rock hits the other over the head with it. The advertisement inspired a series of video remixes in September 2020, replacing elements of the commercial with various jokes, recontextualizing the meaning and narrative of the spot.

Origin

On March 23rd, 2010, Yahoo Answers [1] user Sendtame and Minecraft Forums[2] user mrfatcat posted the two earliest mentions of the commercial online (shown below, left and right, respectively). Sendtame wrote, "I need to find a certain Dairy Queen Commercial that is recently being aired in the Shreveport. LA area. It is the one showing two cartoon cavemen. One caveman offers the other caveman fire for rock. After trading, one caveman hits the other on the head with the rock, it bounces back into his hand and he ends up with both--the fire and rock." mrfatcat wrote, "Lol at the title, be there's a commercial in the USA about two cavemen doing exactly that, and saying it's a good deal. The caveman who takes the rock throws it at the other caveman, takes the fire, and walks away. This might happen in Minecraft.

Somebody will give you a large ammount of arrows for diamonds, and what do they do? Shoots you with the arrows, then takes the diamonds off your dead corpse and runs away. You see? Trades can be extremely dangerous at times! So be careful about what you're trading with people. Weapons wouldn't be the best idea to trade if you're alone. 10 years later, on September 19th, 2020, YouTuber Bigtree2x4 shared the original commercial. Within one week, the post received more than 173,000 views (shown below).

That day, YouTuber Memes and Stuff shared a variation of the meme, remixing it with the audio from the I Like Ya Cut, G meme (shown below, left).

The following day, Redditor Dankpeng420 posted the video in the /r/youtubehaiku[3] subreddit. The post received more than 225 points (97% upvoted) in less than one week. Additionally, on September 20th, YouTuber Turlz Games posted a variation incorporating elements from the Super Mario video game franchise.



On September 23rd, 2020, YouTuber Lessons in Meme Culture shared a short explainer on the meme. The post received more than 64,000 views in less than 24 hours (shown below).
