Although it is unclear who started the trend, the earliest known usage of the Succession theme paired with the "I lied, put your clothes back on" phrasal template was posted on September 2nd, 2024, by TikTok^[1] user @alexaryebread, who uploaded a video of her holding a Harry Potter book and the overlay text, "I lied. Put your clothes back on. I'm going to explain the entire lore of how Harry Potter's dead godfather was in love with his werewolf teacher back in the 70s." The post (seen below) amassed more than 4 million plays and 617,000 likes in a month.

The phrasal template inspired a viral TikTok trend in the following month in which users shared POV memes deceiving others into actually talking about their specific interest subjects.

For instance, on October 3rd, 2024, TikTok^[2] user @tbhrisse posted a video of her sitting in bed accompanied by the overlay text, "I lied. Put your clothes back on. We're going to talk about your first impressions of me. Every thought you've ever had about me." The post (seen below), amassed over 12 million plays and 2.5 million likes in four days.

On October 4th, 2024, TikTok^[3] user @jackieaina posted a video of her in the bathroom alongside the text, "I lied. Put your clothes back on. We're going to discuss how beauty brands are using outrage marketing exclusionary tactics at Black women expenses to get us to market their awful shape ranges for free."
