About
I See You Liked a Post is a phrasal template used to mimic the dialogue of the character Joe Goldberg on the television series You. Variations of the phrase typically feature images of Joe from the series.

On September 9th, 2018, the television series You premiered on the Lifetime network. In the opening monologue, the character Joe Goldberg (portrayed by Penn Badgley) speaks in an inner narration in the second person to a woman that he is about to stalk (shown below).
On December 30th, 2019, Twitter [1] user @EcnahcGnik tweeted, "Oh i see you liked 2 of my pictures on Instagram and one of my tweets." It is the earliest known variation of the format (shown below).
Spread
On January 2nd, 2020, Twitter[2] user @RickyStClair_ responded to a Bomboclaat prompt meme, "Hmmm you liked a tweet, not just any tweet, it was my tweet, with all these people tweeting tonight, you liked mine while going down your feed, was it what I said that intrigued you? it has to be cause none of the 348 likes on your twitter match this one, hmm." The tweet received more than 622,000 likes and 143,000 (shown below, left).
Two days later, Instagram[3] user @sonny5ideup posted a variation of the meme that received more than 46,000 reactions in less than two days (shown below, center).
As the meme spread in usage, others began posting different images of Joe from the series (example below, right).
