“If You’re Cold They’re Cold, Bring Them Inside” is a catchphrase pleading pet owners to bring their pets indoor during winter months. While originally intended as a public service announcement in advocacy of animal rights, the phrase soon became a popular subject of image macro parodies featuring animals that are not traditionally regarded as pets, as well as inanimate objects.

Origin

The first usage of the phrase "If You Are Cold They Are Cold" appears to have been from the Facebook page LoveAllAnimalsForever^[1]. While the image (shown below) is no longer present on the page, it was likely posted around January 2013. The image advocates for bringing animals inside during cold temperatures.

This image was later posted and used on other sites advocating for pet care^[2].

On January 21st 2013, the Facebook page Angelic Dog Treats posted a similar image (shown below) with the phrase "If it's too cold for you it's too cold for your pet. Bring them inside."^[4]

Spread

On February 12th 2015, a blogger on the farm site Progressive Cattle made a post about the meme^[5]. While they found one instance of the meme humorous (seen below), they also felt that it "might appear to a consumer as dismissive of animal needs." and talked about the relationship between ranchers and the public perceptions of what they do.

On January 27th 2016, the site RichWatch made a post explaining that many animals are fine in snowy conditions^[6].
