Is That the Grim Reaper? refers to a clip from a 2018 gameplay video of The Sims by iBerleezy in which he complains about how hot the room is, then screams, "Is that the grim reaper?" The audio became popular on TikTok in early 2021 as an original sound.

Origin

On March 2nd, 2018, iBerleezy uploaded a video to YouTube[1] playing The Sims. At 7:41 into the video, iBerleezy says, as his character is sitting in a room, "It is hot as hell in this fucky ass, hot ass room I'm in," then pans outside to see the grim reaper fishing, exclaiming, "Is that the grim reaper!?" (shown below). The video gained over 316,000 views in just under 3 years.

On January 12th, 2021, @sosawoo uploaded a video to TikTok[2] with the on-screen caption, "some mf changing for a basketball game in 2005" in which he says, "It is hot as hell in this fucky ass, hot ass room I'm in," followed by a cut to an image of Kevin Durant playing basketball, and Sosa yelling, "Is that the grim reaper!?" The video gained over 720,000 views in a month (shown below).

The original sound[3] from the video took off on TikTok, with over 49,000 videos attached to it in under a month. Typically, videos see users lip-dubbing to the sound, then showing something or someone that comically represents a "grim reaper" when the grim reaper line comes up (examples shown below, left and right).[4][5]

On January 18th, @n3cr0v0m1t uploaded a video to TikTok[6] using the sound referring to herself as the grim reaper, garnering over 3 million views in just under a month (shown below, left). On January 21st, @richiescorps posted[7] footage from the Marine Corps using the sound, garnering over 3.9 million views in a comparable span of time (shown below, right). As of February 10th, 2021, these are the two highest-viewed videos using the sound.
