It Really Do Be Like That Sometimes is a catchphrase based on a tweet and video in which the phrase serves as the caption to an image of the Dr. Phil Green M&M. Due to its wording it is very similar to the Oscar Gamble quote They don't think it be like it is, but it do.
Origin
On June 24th, 2017, Twitter[1] user @sethical_ tweeted an image of the Dr. Phil Green M&M photoshopped into the You Know I Had to Do It to Em image. The image is captioned with the phrase, and the tweet is captioned, "when the homie forgot you now that he up 😔." The post (shown below) received more than 90 retweets and 300 likes in one year.
Precursor
The phrase "it be like that sometimes" has existed as a slang expression about the various trials of the human experience. On July 11th, 2006, Urban Dictionary user Victor Erazo defined the expression as "Just stating how life is and how it has its ups and downs and somethings just happen." The post (shown below) received more than 260 upvotes in 12 years.
Spread
Three days later, the image and phrase appeared in sethical's "Bone-In Pizza" video. The post (shown below, left) received more than 2.5 million views in one year.
On June 29th, YouTuber gibby used the phrase in a video. The post (shown below, right) receive more than 1,700 views in one year.
Five days later, on July 4th, YouTuber Koten SilverStreak posted an image of the Dr. Phil M&M edited into the "Redbone" music video. The post (shown below) received more than 80,000 views in one year.
On June 19th, 2018, Redditor [2] the_lazarus_heart published "What is the origin of 'It really do be like that sometimes?'" on the /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit. The post received more than 90 points (93% upvoted) in one month.
