About
Wolf Spritzer refers to events and memes surrounding CNN's coverage of President Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 presidential race in late July 2024. About an hour before Biden's announcement was made, news anchor Wolf Blitzer posted from a restaurant in Washington, D.C. where he was enjoying a "Wolf Spritzer" cocktail named after himself. At 3 p.m. EST, viewers saw Wolf Blitzer broadcast about the breaking news on live television. Presumably, CNN called him into work from the restaurant, leading to memes and commentary online about the situation.
Origin
At 12:47 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on July 21st, 2024, CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer posted a photograph of himself to X / Twitter enjoying a cocktail called the "Wolf Spritzer" at the El Presidente restaurant in Washington, D.C. The post (seen below) received over 32,000 likes in a day.[1] The "Wolf Spritzer" contains aperol, montelobos, mezcal, lemon and cava.
Joe Biden's announcement that he was dropping out of the race for President was then posted to Twitter / X at 1:46 p.m. and to Instagram at 1:48 p.m., just 59 minutes after the "Wolf Spritzer" post. Wolf Blitzer then appeared on the 3 p.m. block of CNN's coverage with fellow anchor Kaitlin Collins.
The earliest post joking about Blitzer's appearance was made at 3:01 p.m. by X user @hjessy_ and showed a photo taken of a TV with Blitzer on it. The post (seen below) earned over 104,000 likes in a day and 6,600 reposts.[2]
Spread
News of Blitzer's cocktail hour and broadcast spread rapidly that day. For example, on July 21st, 2024, X user @vodkasnowflake made a post at 3:02 p.m. (seen below, left), which received over 97,000 likes in one day and 12,000 reposts in the same timeframe.[3] The screenshot from this post was later used widely in many others.
Fans investigated the situation. At 3:47 p.m., with X user @andrewdefrank calculating the route Blitzer had presumably taken from El Presidente to the CNN studio (seen below), earning over 24,000 likes in less than a day.[4]
Others made jokes about Blitzer, including X user @jaketropolis, who modified a 4chan green text made about Barron Trump back in 2020 to refer to Blitzer, earning over 4,800 likes in a day on July 22nd, 2024.[5]
