About

James Comey's "I'm In" Tweet refers to a 2019 April Fools Day prank in which former FBI director James Comey tweeted as though he was running for President as a centrist candidate. The joke did not go over well as people from both sides of the political spectrum mocked Comey's joke and reminded him of his role in the 2016 Presidential Election in which he controversially re-opened an investigation of Hillary Clinton two weeks before the election.

Origin

On April 1st, 2019, former FBI Director James Comey[1] tweeted a joke that he was entering the 2020 Presidential Race as a centrist candidate (shown below).

Spread

The tweet was quickly mocked by both politically left and right members of Twitter. Conservative Mark Dice[2] wrote "April Fools jokes are supposed to be funny" (shown below, left). Splinter News managing editor @kath_krueger[3] she had a "violent" reaction to Comey's tweet (shown below, right).

Others turned Comey's tweet into a copypasta with which they posted various photos. Some examples include a tweet by user @bejohnce[4] which gained over 150 retweets and 2,800 likes (shown below, left) and a tweet by user @margarita[5] that gained over 190 retweets and 2,200 likes (shown below, right). The jokes were covered by Uproxx.[6]
