Japan and South Korea Girls Shipping refers to fan art of Japanese and South Korean girls being shipped together. The trend started after two Twitter users joked that South Korean and Japanese women were rejecting men from their home country, so they should date each other. The trend grew popular among yuri artists on Twitter / X in late August 2024.
Origin
On August 22nd, 2024, Twitter / X[1] user @42Jz6 quote retweeted @lovmd_'s now-limited post with a translated caption that reads, "It's so funny how girls from both Japan and Korea are telling men from their own country to stay away." The post received more than 3,400 reposts and 31,000 likes in one week (shown below, top). The next day, Twitter / X[2] user @aupfmvv quote retweeted @42Jz6's post saying South Korean and Japanese women should date each other. The post received more than 14,000 reposts and 88,000 likes in one week (shown below, bottom).
On August 24, 2024, Twitter / X[3] user @jjz_kq quote retweeted @aupfmvv's post asking artists to draw some yuri mangas based on @42Jz6's post. The post received over 9,400 reposts and 46,000 likes in one week (shown below).
Spread
Starting in late August 2024, the trend of fan art shipping South Korean and Japanese women grew popular among artists on Twitter / X. For example on August 24th, 2024, Twitter / X[4] user @pobae_hoho uploaded art that received over 10,000 reposts and 55,000 likes in one week (shown below).
On August 25th, 2024, Twitter / X[5] user @wachichi__3 uploaded art featuring a Chinese woman. The post received over 4,700 reposts and 36,000 likes in six days (shown below).
Similar to the Every Country's Miku trend, artists started to participate in the trend by drawing women outside of Japan and South Korea. For example on August 25th, 2024, Twitter / X[6] user @theblueslope uploaded fan art depicting Indonesian and Malaysian women that received over 6,800 reposts and 27,000 likes in six days (shown below).
The same day, Twitter / X[7] user @netsue101 uploaded an art depicting Thai and Filipino women that received over 2,500 reposts and 9,200 likes in six days (shown below).
